Erling Haaland won the Golden Boy Award on Saturday, the prize for the greatest talent in Europe up to 21 years. The Borussia Dortmund striker received the most votes in the Italian newspaper’s annual election Tuttosport.

Haaland second player from Dortmund to win the prize

Twenty-year-old Haaland, that Saturday on the front page of Tuttosport received more votes than, among others, Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho, FC Barcelona striker Ansu Fati and Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich.

Among the last twenty contenders were Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, Mitchel Bakker (Paris Saint-Germain) and Sergiño Dest (FC Barcelona). PSV midfielder Mohamed Ihattaren, AZ striker Myron Boadu and Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida, among others, dropped out earlier.

The Golden Boy Award is a reward for Haaland for his stormy development in recent years. The Norwegian top talent broke through at Red Bull Salzburg and forced a transfer to Borussia Dortmund in January of this year.

In 29 official matches for Dortmund, Haaland scored 27 times and was good for six assists. The seven-time international, currently shared top scorer in the Champions League, has already scored eleven times in eleven games this season.

Haaland follows in the footsteps of Atlético Madrid forward João Félix, who won the prestigious award last year with the Golden Boy Award. After Mario Götze (2011), he is the second player from Borussia Dortmund to be named ‘Golden Boy’

In 2018, that honor fell to Matthijs de Ligt. The then Ajax player and Rafael van der Vaart are the only two Dutchmen who ever managed to win the Golden Boy Award. Van der Vaart was immediately the first winner in 2003.
