In Afghanistan, at least 23 civilians died in a mortar attack on a cattle market in Helmand province. A car bomb also exploded, local Afghan officials told the AP news agency. Children are also among the victims.
At the time of the attack, hundreds of traders were in the cattle market with their sheep and goats.
The Taliban and the Afghan army blame themselves for the attack. According to a spokesman for the Helmand governor, the Taliban fired the mortars.
President Ghani condemned the attack as “brutal and inhuman” and says that killing civilians, especially children, violates all Islamic and humane rules.
Taliban and Afghanistan officials are expected to talk more about ending their internal conflict early next month. At the end of Ramadan, there was a pause for combat, but the fight started again.
