“He regards Maradona as his son, he cannot handle this,” said Bilardo’s son Jorge on Thursday Radio Province.

Bilardo was the choice of the Argentine national team that won the world title in 1986 on the basis of Maradona. He has severe neurological disorders and is cared for at home by a nurse.

“I told her to cut the cable of the television. She told Carlos there is a malfunction. We are also keeping all newspapers away from him for the time being,” said Jorge.

Bilardo was Argentina’s national coach during the 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Cups. Also in 1990 he reached the final with his team, losing to West Germany. Maradona was still there at the time.

Maradona, who is one of the best football players of all time, died on Wednesday from the consequences of cardiac arrest. The Argentine government immediately declared three days of national mourning.

Thousands of Argentines have now gathered at the Buenos Aires presidential palace, where the coffin containing Maradona’s body is. He will be buried on Thursday in a suburb of Buenos Aires.
