Vocalist Beyoncén Mum Tina Knowles-Lawson, 66, talks about the backgrounds of the artist name used by her daughter in the In My Head with Heather Thomson podcast.

– Many people don’t know that Beyoncé is my last name. That’s my girl’s name. My name was Celestine Beyoncé, which wasn’t a cool thing at the time when the name was so weird. I would have liked to be Linda Smith then, because it was a neat name back then, Tina Knowles-Lawson says.

Due to a typo that once occurred, the name familiar to other relatives of the artist is in a slightly different form. Their last name is Beyincé.

– I think my brother Skip and I are the only ones whose last name was Beyoncé.

Tina Knowles-Lawson’s mother once complained that the birth name of all the family members was not spelled correctly, but eventually left the matter to her.

– He said he complained about it once. It was the only time I was asked to be happy that I got birth certificates because blacks didn’t always get them, Tina Knowles-Lawson says her mother stated.
