Kiki Bertens will face Markéta Vondrousová in the first round of the Olympic tennis tournament. The Czech is currently ranked 41, having been a finalist at Roland Garros 2019.
Bertens, a 29-year old Bertens, was sixteenth among 64 Tokyo participants. The Westland player took on Vondrousová once before, she lost that game. The Czech won the 2018 US Open with 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1), and 1-6.
If Bertens wins both matches, she will be able to meet Naomi Osaka of Japan in the third round. After she quit Roland Garros because of the controversy over her press boycott, Osaka finished second in her country.
Bertens declared last month that her career would come to an end after this season. Before she traveled to Japan, Bertens announced to the world that her final tournament would be the Olympics.
Kiki Bertens is waiting for a duel with Markéta Vondrousová, from whom she has never won in the past.
Bertens & Schuurs placed third in doubles
Bertens, along with Demi Shuurs, will be making her debut in the doubles. The Dutch duo will be competing against Kristina Malovic/Caroline Garcia, a French pair. Third are Bertens and Schuurs. Mladenovic & Garcia won the doubles at Roland Garros 2016
The men’s doubles saw Wesley Koolhof (number eight) and Jean-Julien Rojer (number nine). They were paired up with the Belgians Sander Gile and Joran Vliegen. The draw for the mixed doubles draws will be made at a later date.
Saturday will see the Olympic tennis tournament. Novak Djokovic was placed first in the men’s singles. Ashleigh Barty is second in the women’s singles. Djokovic will be playing against Hugo Dellien, Bolivia. Barty will be facing Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain.
