Steven Bergwijn reached the play-offs of the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening. The Londoners were 1-3 too strong for FK Shkendija in Macedonia. Ryan Babel was important for Galatasaray with a goal.

Lens and Besiktas eliminated after penalties

Erik Lamela scored 0-1 after five minutes, after which Shkëndija surprisingly tied the score in the 55th minute. Concerns for ‘Spurs’ increased, but Heung-Min Son still took care of the liberating 1-2 twenty minutes before time and Harry Kane closed the game shortly afterwards with a header.

Manager José Mourinho gave Bergwijn a basic place in Macedonia and replaced the Orange-international for Lucas Moura in the 65th minute. In the play-offs, Tottenham awaits a showdown with the Israeli Maccabi Haifa, which defeated FC Rostov 1-2.

Babel and Ryan Donk only have to beat one opponent with Galatasaray to reach the group stage of the Europa League. The Turkish top club was 2-0 too strong for Hajduk Split in Istanbul.

Younès Belhanda took care of the opening goal in the 77th minute and Babel signed for the 2-0 nine minutes later. The former Ajax player, who, just like Donk, played ninety minutes, tapped in on the edge of offside in the five-meter area.

For competitor Besiktas and Jeremain Lens, the third preliminary round was the end station. The Turkish club went down after penalties against the Portuguese Rio Ave. Lens did not experience the penalty series anymore, because he was replaced in the extension at a 1-1 score.

Wout Weghorst did reach the play-offs with VfL Wolfsburg thanks to a victory over the Ukrainian Desna, who played with one man less in the last thirty minutes. Weghorst was replaced by a 1-0 score in the 78th minute. In injury time it became 2-0 via Daniel Ginczek.

Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s FC Basel also qualified for the play-offs thanks to a narrow 3-2 victory over the Cypriot Anorthosis Famagusta. The Dutch striker, who recently extended his expiring contract with Basel at the last minute, participated in the entire match.
