Benfica’s Lisbon coach Bruno Lage has resigned. He made the decision after an unexpected defeat of the defending player Martimo Funchal 0-2. His place is to be taken – as the media reports – former Tottenham Hotspur trainer Argentinean Mauricio Pochettino.

“Our coach Bruno Lage turned to me after the match and said he was resigning. He said he couldn’t help Benfica,” said club chairman Luis Felipe Vieira.

The defending club from the capital now ranks second in the table and has six points loss to FC Porto.

In the last five matches, which took place after the resumption of competition, the Benfica players have won only one victory.

Lage worked in Benfica from January 2019 and led to the 37th championship in history.
