FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu decided on Tuesday, together with the entire board of the top club, to leave. The president had long been under fire at Camp Nou.
Messi finds Bartomeu ‘a disaster’
Bartomeu announced his decision at a press conference on Tuesday evening, after a meeting of the board.
The chairman thus keeps the honor to himself. A vote on his position was scheduled for early November, after sufficient signatures had been collected among FC Barcelona members for a vote of no confidence against Bartomeu.
The 57-year-old Catalan was the president of Barça since early 2014. He was at the end of his second and final term. The presidential elections are scheduled for March 20-21, 2021.
Bartomeu appointed Ronald Koeman as coach last summer. For the future of the Dutch trainer, it is important who the new president will be and what his plans for the future are.
Bartomeu is held responsible by a large part of the Barcelona fans for the sporting crisis in which the club has ended up. The low point was the 2-8 defeat against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last August.
The controversial chairman also had a long fight with Lionel Messi. The star player and captain wanted to leave Barcelona last summer, but withdrew that wish at the beginning of September. He then stressed in an interview with Goal one more time that “the management under chairman Josep Maria Bartomeu is a disaster”.
