The final vote to choose the venue will be held on December 9
Barcelona’s candidacy to host the third headquarters of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Predictions (ECMWF, according to its acronym in English) has passed the first phase, as reported this Friday by the Government Delegation in Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council. The proposal has gone to the second round of selection of the 10 that have been submitted to the contest, and the final vote to choose the venue will be held on December 9 in the Council of the Center that brings together the 22 member states.
The project for Barcelona to host the ECMWF headquarters was promoted jointly by the Government, the Generalitat and the Consistory and a team made up of professionals and technicians from the three administrations has worked in it in coordination with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
This new headquarters would join the one in Reading, in the United Kingdom, and the one already being built in the Italian city of Bologna, which will host the new supercomputer of the center in 2021.
Both the Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, and the First Deputy Mayor, Jaume Collboni, have celebrated that Barcelona’s candidacy is among the finalist options and have praised the work of the project team. “It is a sign that the city looks to the future. We do not stop attending from day to day, but neither do we give up working for the Barcelona of tomorrow ”, said Collboni, who added that this news will help attract global companies that provide quality employment to the city and relevance.
