(Alavés-Barcelona 1-1) Barcelona fooled themselves with a cruel setback – and failed to win even if opponent Alavés had to settle for ten men for half an hour.

Thus, the big club is still number 12 on the table. Lionel Messi tried and tried to score a winning goal towards the end, but the Argentine is still without a goal in the league this season.

Barcelona completely messed it up when Alavés took the lead 1-0. Gerard Pique chooses to play back to goalkeeper Neto – instead of clearing out. Neto failed to stack his legs, and Luis Rioja stepped in between, securing the ball and rolling it over the goal line.

Half an hour remained of the match when Alavés made it difficult for himself. Jota’s Gerard Pique got himself booked for a foul. He got his second yellow card and was sent off.

Right after the expulsion, Barcelona equalized. Like the Alavés goal, it happened after an unfortunate attempt at rebounding. Antoine Griezmann came in between and scored safely 1-1. It is the first goal of the season for the Frenchman.

Most then expected that it would be an easy match for Ronald Koeman’s men with 11 against 10. They had the ball 83 percent of the time in the second half. But they had trouble putting the finishing touches on it.

Lionel Messi put the ball in the net after 85 minutes, but it was a clear offside – and the goal was canceled.

Alavés goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco had some incredible saves at the end. He became the great hero of the battle.

Barcelona lost to Real Madrid in El Clásico a week ago and to Getafe the week before. But it was 2-0 over Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.

In the league it is worse: two wins, two draws and two losses in the season’s six games.

Ronald Koeman had made three changes since El Clásico; Sergino Dest, Pedri and Philippe Coutinho were replaced by Sergio Roberto, Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann from the start.
