The son of the seven-time world champion, leader of the F2, was going to turn aboard an Alfa Romeo. But the rain postponed its premiere at the maximum.

The first free practice for the Eifel Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the 2020 Formula One World Cup, was suspended due to bad weather that prevented the opening of the ‘pit lane’ on the traditional German circuit of 1 Nürburgring. And it thwarted the expected premiere of Mick Schumacher in the highest category.

The 21-year-old son of the ‘Kaiser heads the Formula 2 championship and belongs to the Ferrari Young Drivers Academy. I was going to shoot for the first time in free practice: at the controls of the Alfa Romeo of the Italian Antonio Giovinazzi.

His presence had caused enormous expectations at the Nürburgring, where his father – still convalescing from the serious ski accident he suffered in Meribel (French Alps) at the end of 2013 – won the European Grand Prix five times. The one from Germany had scored it four other times, but at the Hockenheim circuit.

However, the Formula 2 leader’s dream was frustrated because the rain and poor visibility prevented the medical helicopter from taking off on the traditional German track. which will once again be the scene of a competition of the highest category after seven years of absence from the calendar.

The race is named after the Eifel, a mountainous region in western Germany where the circuit is located.

The second free training session is scheduled to start at 10 am in Argentina. It will be the only one of the day, as long as the weather conditions improve.

The Eifel GP is scheduled for this Sunday and could go down in history if finally the Englishman Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), outstanding leader of the event, manages to win to equal the record of 91 victories of the German Michael Schumacher.

The main positions of the F1 championship, with nine rounds remaining, are: Hamilton 205 points; Valtteri Bottas (Finland, Mercedes) 161; Max Verstappen (Netherlands, Red Bull) 128; Lando Norris (Great Britain, McLaren) 65.
