AZ has booked a victory for the first time this Eredivisie season on Sunday. The team of trainer Arne Slot was 3-0 too strong for RKC Waalwijk in the AFAS Stadium.
Boadu returns from corona infection
Calvin Stengs quickly made the opening goal, after which Albert Gudmundsson was twice accurate in the second half. Teun Koopmeiners missed a penalty kick in a 1-0 score, but that had no major consequences for AZ, which relinquished a lead several times in recent weeks and only drew (five times).
With the win, AZ rises to ninth place with eight points from six games, one game less than the competition. RKC has five points and occupies the thirteenth place.
AZ has already shown signs of recovery in the Europa League in recent weeks. With six points, the Alkmaarders are in the lead in group F and the away match against Real Sociedad awaits next Thursday.

Before the game against RKC, there was already good news for AZ, as Myron Boadu, Ferdy Druijff and Timo Letschert returned from their corona infection, although all three started on the bench.
Stengs, Gudmundsson and Jesper Karlsson formed the forefront of the home team and the former tapped in the 1-0 after five minutes on a pass from Koopmeiners. More opportunities for AZ soon followed, but they were not successful. Gudmundsson was the closest with an attempt on the crossbar.
The weak RKC offered almost nothing in return. There seemed nothing to worry about, but the past few weeks there was still cause for some concern at Slot. Especially when Koopmeimers, just like earlier this season against Sparta, saw his penalty kick turned by RKC keeper Kostas Lamprou and Karlsson shot the rebound into the side net.
Eighteen minutes before the end, the liberating 2-0 fell. Karlsson gave in and Gudmundsson worked hard and high inside, after which the Icelander put the 3-0 final score on the scoreboard in injury time on a pass from Owen Wijndal.
