We now know the semi-finals of this last London Masters. The world number one, Novak Djokovic, will be there and complete the magic square. Strong winner of Alexander Zverev in 1h36 (6-3, 7-6), the Serbian joins Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev. Either his three pursuers in the ATP ranking. Winner in 2018 and semi-finalist in 2019, Zverev remains docked and can always regret his irregularity. Opposed to Thiem tomorrow, Djokovic will find a player who mistreated (and beaten) him in pools last year.
Strong and focused, Djokovic tightened the bolts to subdue Zverev
In this decisive match for the qualification, Novak Djokovic showed a completely different face than against Daniil Medvedev. More concentrated and more applied, he immediately took the service of his opponent who found nothing better than a double fault to concede the break. An advantage held until the end of the set despite a slight warning in the seventh game with two break points to dismiss. After 34 minutes of play, the Serbian approached the semi-finals (6-3).
If he continued with his double faults (six), Zverev was able to compensate with twelve aces and continued aggressiveness during this second set. The German thus managed twenty winning shots more than Djokovic in total (38 against 18). But that was not enough against the quality of defense of the world number one who turned into a “wall” as soon as necessary. He thus held until the tie-break where he presents hallucinating statistics this season.
The mini-break achieved from the second point by Zverev did not worry him too much and he calmly returned to height before taking the lead by winning three consecutive points (2-3 to 5-3). The Serbian therefore won a fourteenth tie-break in 2020 (out of fifteen played). But, against Dominic Thiem, he will still have to raise his level of play to continue to dream of a sixth Masters title. The two players had played one of the most beautiful matches of the 2019 edition before finding themselves in the final of the Australian Open. The fight promises to be enticing.
