Atalanta stunts with victory over Liverpool, defending champion Bayern hibernates in CL

Atalanta Bergamo has booked a great 0-2 victory at Liverpool in the Champions League group of Ajax on Wednesday. Defending champion Bayern Munich has already been qualified for the eighth finals of the Champions League thanks to a 3-1 win over Red Bull Salzburg.

Bayern already sure of place in the eighth finals

Atalanta, with Hans Hateboer and Marten de Roon on the field for ninety minutes and Sam Lammers on the bench, took the lead on the empty Anfield Road after an hour of play. Josip Ilicic tapped in a turning cross at the far post.

Former Heraclied Robin Gosens made it 0-2 four minutes later. The German was able to finish completely free after Hateboer had headed the ball in front of the goal.

Georginio Wijnaldum was substituted 1-0 shortly after the English champion. Liverpool is still the leader and will play at home against Ajax on Tuesday, which was 3-1 too strong for FC Midtjylland tonight.

Bayern is already certain of group A win. The defending champion took the lead shortly before half time via Robert Lewandowski, who tapped in from close range after Salzburg keeper Cican Stankovic parried a shot from Thomas Müller.

It was Lewandowski’s 71st Champions League hit, meaning the Pole now shares third place on the all-time top scorers list with Raul. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (131) and Lionel Messi (118) scored more than those two.

Early in the second half Bayern came in at 2-0. Ex-Ajax player Maximilian Wöber turned a Kingsley Coman shot into his own goal. Shortly afterwards, the Germans had to continue with ten men, because midfielder Marc Roca, who made his debut in the Champions League, received his second yellow card.

With a man less, the defending champion quickly came to 3-0, Leroy Sané headed from close range. With a ticker Mergim Berisha did something back for the Austrians: 3-1.

Bayern thus won the Champions League for the sixteenth time in a row, equaling the record of Atlético Madrid. Next week, the team of trainer Hansi Flick can only get the record if it wins away from Atlético. The Spaniards did not get further than 0-0 at home against Lokomotiv Moscow on Wednesday and still have to work hard in the last two group matches.
