Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is very satisfied with the start of his team in the Champions League. In Ajax’s group, the Italians started with a convincing 0-4 victory over FC Midtjylland.
“We have shown our scoring ability. We only play against good teams, so it was extra important to start well,” Gasperini said after the game in Denmark.
“Now there are home games against Ajax and Liverpool and we have every chance to get through the group stage. These three points against Midtjylland are essential.”
Hans Hateboer and Marten de Roon had a base place at Atalanta, which already led 0-3 at half time by goals from Duván Zapata, Alejandro Gómez and Luis Muriel. Deep in the second half, Aleksey Miranchuk determined the final score.
According to Gasperini, the victory over Midtjylland was not a formality. “It wasn’t easy, but we’ve made it easier for ourselves. The other teams in the group will have a hard time here.”
Atalanta, which has performed surprisingly well in recent years, will play at home against Ajax next Tuesday. FC Midtjylland will simultaneously visit Liverpool in group D.
