At least one person has been killed and several injured in a shooting in central Vienna in the vicinity of a synagogue, as reported by various local media without there being, for now, more details or official confirmation.

Vienna police have reported a “major operation” by the security forces in the center of the Austrian capital, while local media have already distributed videos in which numerous shots are heard and they assure that it is an attack on the synagogue.

The authorities have asked people in the street not to go near the place where the shooting occurred, apparently at Schwenplatz, and to avoid using urban means of transport.

The president of the Israeli community in Vienna, Oskar Deutsch, has said that he cannot confirm whether the synagogue has been the target of the attack, before highlighting that the temple “had been closed for several hours”. “There are no people inside,” he stressed, according to the newspaper ‘Der Standard’.

For its part, the Ministry of the Interior has said that it could be a terrorist attack, without confirming it for the moment, as reported by the Austrian state news agency, APA.
