Arsenal strengthened themselves on Monday evening in the last hours of the transfer period with Thomas Partey. The midfielder comes over from Atlético Madrid for 50 million euros and signs a multi-year contract with the Londoners.
The rumors about a switch had been going on for some time, but Arsenal did not announce the transfer until 00:30. The 27-year-old Partey had a departure clause in his contract with Atlético until mid-2023, so that ‘The Gunners’ did not have to negotiate a transfer fee with the Madrid people.
While Arsenal takes over Partey from Atlético Madrid, Lucas Torreira is taking the opposite direction. The Spanish top club takes over the midfielder on a rental basis for the rest of the season. Torreira did not play this season.
For Partey, his period at Atlético comes to a fairly abrupt end, where he went through the youth academy. The 26-time international made his debut for ‘Los Colchoneros’ in November 2015 and played 188 official games. In the 2017/2018 season, he won the Europa League and in 2018 the European Super Cup with Atlético.
Partey is the second big million-dollar purchase for Arsenal in the last transfer period. The Premier League club previously took over defender Gabriel Magalhaes for around 26 million euros from Lille.
Partey can make his debut for Arsenal on Saturday 17 October, which will then have a tough away match against Manchester City. Arteta’s team is on nine points after four rounds, good for fourth place in the Premier League.
