Arsenal reached the eighth finals of the League Cup on Wednesday at the expense of Leicester City. The Londoners were 0-2 too strong for the leader in the Premier League. Kai Havertz scored a hat-trick for Chelsea against Barnsley.

Havertz makes hat trick for Chelsea

Leicester City had a slight advantage in their own King Power Stadium, but in the absence of goalgetter Jamie Vardy, manager Brendan Rodgers’ team was unable to convert the many opportunities into goals.

Arsenal did succeed, although ‘The Gunners’ needed help from home club. A bet by Nicolas Pépé ended up on the post in the 57th minute, after which the ball rolled over the goal line via the incoming Christian Fuchs. Edward Nketiah decided the game in injury time with the 0-2.

In the last sixteen, Arsenal will face the winner of the third-round match between Liverpool and League One club Lincoln City, which is scheduled for Thursday.

At Chelsea, Havertz excelled in the home game against Barnsley, which plays in the Championship. The attacking midfielder, who came over from Bayer Leverkusen for 80 million euros this summer, made a hat-trick in the 6-0 win. It was his first hits for Chelsea.

The other goals were scored by Tammy Abraham, Ross Barkley and substitute Olivier Giroud. Manager Frank Lampard saved, among others, million purchase Timo Werner, who stayed on the bench for the entire match. Newcomer Ben Chilwell made his debut. Chelsea will face the winner of Leyton Orient-Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.

Further in the League Cup, Joël Veltman and Davy Pröpper with Brighton & Hove Albion were 0-2 too strong for Championship club Preston North End, Everton won 2-5 at League One club Fleetwood Town and Newcastle United played at Morecambe , which plays in League Two: 0-7.
