At least four men were killed in an armed attack in Zone 5 of the City of Guatemala (center), according to a report from the Municipal Fire Department. The rescue entity published on their social networks that the attack they were alerted to left four men dead from “several” gunshot wounds. Two were inside a home and the other two outside the home.
The fire department officer Gerardo Martínez assured that the attack occurred on 12th street and 33rd avenue of the El Edén neighborhood in zone 5. The people were between 23 and 45 years old, Martínez said, who assured that relatives of the victims they had identified the four subjects.
Murders on the rise
In a secondary event, which occurred in zone 1 (historic center), the Municipal Firefighters recovered the body of a woman who was also attacked by firearm on public roads. During the first seven months of 2020, at least 1,911 people were killed according to a report by the humanitarian organization Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo (GAM).
The GAM warned that the murder rate of the country is of 22 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers that there is an “epidemic” when the rate is higher than 10 people per 100,000 inhabitants.
Very violent country
The Central American country registered a total of 3,578 murders, that is, a rate of 21 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to its Ministry of the Interior (Interior).
Guatemala is considered by international organizations as one of the 20 most violent nations of the world, in a list that includes several of its neighbors such as Mexico, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador.
