The Secretary of Public Health, Josep Maria Argimon, recalled this Thursday, after reviewing the screening situation that parents of children in quarantine due to the positive result of a classmate are considered “close contact contacts” and, therefore , “are not confined.” The Health Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya has updated the protocol of action in cases of covid-19 and has established that the quarantines go from 14 to 10 days.
Salut has published a new “Procedure for action against cases of infection by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2”, and it has been decided after evaluating that it is more beneficial to shorten the quarantines so that their compliance is greater.
The reduction of the quarantine period especially affects schools so that, with the entry into force of the new protocol, schools will notify families with students in quarantine that they will be able to resume face-to-face activity once 10 days have passed, he reported the Ministry of Education.
Despite the change in quarantine days, the confinement authorizations signed by the families in their day are still valid, Education has clarified.
Teachers will return in 10 days if there are no symptoms
In the case of professionals in the educational field who are in confinement without medical leave, they will also return to schools and institutes after these 10 days, together with the rest of the members of the stable group of coexistence.
The Ministry has detailed that those professionals with medical leave initially prescribed for 14 days who have been replaced in their job at the educational center, will join once the medical leave ends, at which time the appointment of their substitute will also end.
In the educational field, the update of the document establishes that when a case is suspected, the minors of the coexistence group will maintain the school activity while waiting for the results, without mixing with the rest of the groups.
If the tests carried out are negative, the children and tutors of the group will continue their activities normally, and the affected student will be able to join when the symptoms have subsided, after 24 hours without fever.
In the positive case of COVID-19, the group and tutor will be quarantined for 10 days, and the PCR test will be indicated at the center itself or at other specific points for the rest of the students and teachers, as indicated by the primary care teams.
Criteria to confine
The Catalan secretary of Public Health, Josep Maria Argimon, and the head of the Covid-19 Monitoring Unit in Catalonia, Jacobo Mendioroz, They have also explained that they do not make restrictive decisions only when a certain threshold of incidence is exceeded, but in a “much more complex” way and that is why the opposite positioning of this territory to the document adopted this Wednesday in the Interterritorial Health Council, which restricts the entries and exits in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants with a higher incidence of coronavirus.
The agreement includes restrictions on the entry and exit of people in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants with a cumulative incidence of covid greater than 500 cases in 14 days, with a percentage of positivity in diagnostic tests greater than 10% and that form part of a community in which the occupancy of ICU beds by COVID patients is greater than 35%.
“We never make our decisions based on a threshold but always on a series of indicators”, Argimon has defended. “It is very important to undertake gradual and sequential actions” to avoid “restricting mobility”, which is what he said two days ago that it should be done with Madrid.
Measures before 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
Thus, he has detailed that he “subscribes” to the measures indicated in the agreement but has said that he believes that “they should be implemented long before reaching 500 cases (per 100,000 inhabitants) so as not to have to perimeter”.
Likewise, it has considered that explicitly setting the threshold at 500 may make the judges, who must endorse certain resolutions, not accept the restrictions decreed by the health authorities if the cumulative incidence is lower than this figure.
Mendioroz has added that Catalonia decided to confine Lleida regions to the perimeter when the incidence has said that it was situated at 180 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and there were no ICU admissions and, even so, he believes that it was “a bit late”.
Argimon announced that Catalonia already has one million rapid antigen tests to detect covid-19, 500,000 of which are already ready in a logistics center to be distributed when necessary.
