Apple will adjust the emoji with a face mask in a future software update, making the smiley look more cheerful. That discovered Emojipedia.

Apple is responding to corona

The updated smiley is already included in a trial version of iOS 14.2, which will be released for all supported iPhones, iPads and iPods at a later date. It is not yet known when this will happen.

The face mask emoji has been in iOS and operating systems of other tech companies for some time, but usually makes a sick face.

The new variant has happier eyes and added eyebrows. It seems to be based on the smiling emoji that can be used on phones for some time.

With this, Apple seems to be responding to the current corona pandemic, as a result of which people worldwide increasingly wear masks.

The old variant implied that only sick people wear a cap, which goes against the advice of health organizations worldwide. They also advise people without symptoms to put on a mask.

The smileys used on a smartphone are usually defined by the Unicode Consortium, after which telephone makers can all give their own interpretation to them.

Because the face mask emoji already existed, Apple can presumably adjust it without discussing this with the consortium. The original emoji also does not stipulate that it must look in a specific way.
