In Sochi, McLaren did not score points for the first time this season. After the race, the head of the team Andreas Seidl noted that the British team no longer has an advantage over rivals from Racing Point and Renault, but McLaren expects to recoup in the upcoming stages.
Andreas Seidl: “In the race we had only one hope of earning points with Lando – if something extraordinary happened. Unfortunately, nothing happened. In terms of sheer speed, we could count on no more than eleventh place, because Alex Albon was too fast at Red Bull. That is why at the end of the race we held a pit stop in an attempt to do something.
After qualifying, it seemed that we had a good chance of competing for points, since we were in the very epicenter of the fight against Renault and Racing Point. The result was disappointing, but we will draw conclusions and try to perform better at the Nurburgring.
If we talk about the situation in the championship, it is obvious that now in the middle group the fastest car at Racing Point. This is not surprising considering how it was constructed. Renault also seriously added to the Spa. Thanks to the riders and the great work of the whole team, we always walked with them at the same pace. Now we need to improve the car even more actively in order to maintain a high speed and stay in this top three until the end of the season. We know we must not stop upgrading the MCL35.
However, in the next races, not everything depends on updates only. Every time we have to find the ideal settings that have a fairly narrow working range. When we succeed, we win back one tenth; when not, we lose a tenth. When the results are so tight, it corresponds to the difference between the sixth and twelfth place at the start. It is interesting to watch such a struggle from the outside, but for us it causes a constant headache. “
