Indian Balasubramanyam was pronounced dead on Monday after being taken to hospital. He was placed in a cold room until the next day, when the funeral home came to take his body for burial. But they saw the man tremble and realized that he was alive.

He was then taken to a second hospital, but died on Friday.

The head of the government hospital in the city of Salem, Dr. Balajinathan, said that the patient was hospitalized in a state of drowsiness following his rescue and died due to lung problems.

He said it was unclear how many hours Balasubramanyam spent in the cold room.

After being pronounced dead by a doctor at a private hospital on Monday, his family took his body home and asked a local funeral home to send a freezer box. They then informed relatives that they would hold a funeral on Tuesday.

The funeral home claims that Balasubramanyam’s brother told them he had a letter signed by a doctor about his death.

Salem police chief Senthil Kumar said the family could not present a medical certificate for Balasubramanyam’s death. Police have opened a case against the family for “acting recklessly or carelessly endangering human life.”

The family claims that the man also suffered from neurological problems.

Balasubramanyam lived with his wife, two daughters and brother.

According to the BBC, it is not clear how he survived the cold temperatures inside the cold room – or whether the private hospital where he was originally pronounced dead is also being investigated.
