The first podium is a serious event for every Formula 1 driver, and perhaps it should be celebrated somehow brightly, but, according to Alexander Albon, he noted this achievement more than modestly.
In Mugello, the Red Bull Racing driver finished third, eight laps ahead of Daniel Riccardo in a beautiful outer radius maneuver. Success in the Grand Prix of Tuscany came to Albon just in time, when talk became louder and louder that he was too much inferior to Max Verstappen.
“Of course, I am glad, all this is very pleasant, – said Alexander in an interview with the official website of the championship. – We already had a couple of chances to climb the podium, and of course, I would like it to happen a little earlier. Still, it’s great. To be honest, everything happened on time, because there were already a lot of all kinds of conversations.
There was a feeling that things were going better in Spa and Monza, that I was making progress, so it was really nice to achieve the result we deserved. And, of course, everyone who works on my side of the garage hasn’t had the opportunity to enjoy the podium for a long time, so it was nice to give them that reason.
I would say that it was one of my best races. The qualifications behind the wheel of this car are my Achilles’ heel, but thanks to the new products that appear on the RB16, the driving experience on Saturday is getting better, I am piloting more and more confidently and I understand the car better, which helps on Sundays. But the race in Mugello was really great. “
But Alex didn’t really celebrate his success: “I dined by candlelight, but alone. Allowed myself a good steak and tiramisu and then went to bed. It all looked quite tragic. But on Monday we were shooting a day at the karting track, so I had to stay in Italy. I was at the hotel where I was staying that weekend and was completely alone. Actually, some couple were sitting at the next table, but they didn’t even know who I was … “
