Ajax starts Sunday without Perr Schuurs and Mohammed Kudus in the away match against FC Groningen. The defender and the midfielder are not fit enough for the game in the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium.
Striker Balk (19) makes basic debut at FC Groningen
Trainer Erik ten Hag said earlier this week that Kudus had dropped out of training and was a doubt for the duel with Groningen. Schuurs, who sustained a shoulder injury in the home game against Vitesse on Saturday, is also not fit enough to start. Unlike Kudus, the defender is on the bench.
Due to the slight injury of Schuurs, Jurriën Timber is in the base. The nineteen-year-old defender, who already made his basic debut last season, will play his fourth official match in the main force of Ajax in Groningen.
Ryan Gravenberch returns (as Kudus’ replacement) after an absence of two matches. He forms a duo with Edson Álvarez in the center of midfield. The Mexican got a red card against Vitesse, but it was dropped this week.
The injured Arjen Robben is still missing at FC Groningen. Trainer Danny Buijs has made room in the forefront for nineteen-year-old Remco Balk, who is making his basic debut on behalf of the ‘Trots of the North’.
The match between FC Groningen and Ajax starts on Sunday at 12.15 and is led by referee Dennis Higler. The team from Amsterdam is still without losing points in the Eredivisie after three rounds of play.
Line-up FC Groningen: Padt; Dankerlui, Itakura, Dammers, Van Hintum; El Messaoudi, Matusiwa, Van Kaam, Lundqvist; Strand Larsen and Balk.
