Ajax did not come out of the home game against Heracles Almelo (5-0) on Sunday. Davy Klaassen and Zakaria Labyad were injured and may therefore miss the important home game against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Ten Hag: ‘Race against the clock for Antony’
Klaassen was already hit from behind in the eighth minute by Heracles midfielder Rai Vloet. He tried after that, but had to be replaced halfway through the first half for Jurgen Ekkelenkamp.
Labyad, who scored twice, seemed to overstretch his body in the final phase and could not continue. Ajax therefore ended with ten men, because trainer Erik ten Hag had already changed five times.
It is not yet clear what Klaassen – he made his return to the Dutch national team last week after three years – and Labyad are wrong and whether they are a question mark for the meeting with Midtjylland in the group stage of the Champions League.
Noussair Mazraoui was also injured against Heracles. Mazraoui received a kick to his ankle just before half-time from Vloet and was probably replaced halfway through by Sean Klaiber.
Ajax may also have to do without Antony against Midtjylland. Two weeks ago, the attacker sustained a hamstring injury in the away match against FC Utrecht (0-3 win) and was not fit enough for the confrontation with Heracles.
“It will be a race against time”, said trainer Erik ten Hag just before the match against Heracles FOX Sports. “It is not completely out of the question that he can participate. He has started team training again, but is not yet fully connected.”
Due to the simple victory over Heracles, Ajax is only in the lead in the Eredivisie, because Vitesse played a draw on Saturday at FC Groningen (1-1). The team from Amsterdam can therefore look forward to the match against Midtjylland with confidence.
Not only were there the necessary injury problems at Ajax on Sunday, but that was also the case with Heracles. Robin Pröpper (knee) and Silvester van der Water (groin) fell out injured on that side.
