Ajax is going for a second home win in the Champions League in more than two years

Ajax hopes to keep an eye on the knockout phase of the Champions League with a victory over FC Midtjylland on Wednesday. However, a victory in their own Johan Cruijff ArenA is no certainty for the team from Amsterdam: in more than two years, only one Champions League match was won at home.

Ajax has already scored three home matches without a goal

Since the 1-0 victory over Benfica on October 23, 2018 (goal Noussair Mazraoui), only Lille OSC has been won. Hits from Quincy Promes, Edson Álvarez and Nicolás Tagliafico ended that match in 3-0 last year on 17 September.

The other seven home duels since the victory over Benfica did not yield a profit, although the team from Amsterdam faced strong opponents. Ajax stayed at home without a win against Bayern Munich (3-3), Real Madrid (1-2), Juventus (1-1), Tottenham Hotspur (2-3), Chelsea (0-1), Valencia (0-1) and Liverpool (0-1).

So Ajax lost the last three home matches. It only happened once that a Dutch club lost four consecutive home matches in the main tournament of the Champions League. PSV lost between 1992 and 1997 against AC Milan (1-2), IFK Göteborg (1-3), FC Porto (0-1) and Dynamo Kiev (1-3).

Ajax also did not score in the last three home matches. In fact, the last thirteen Champions League goals of the team from Amsterdam were all made in away matches.

If the team of trainer Erik ten Hag also remains dry against Midtjylland, Ajax will end up in a select row. Only three clubs – Dinamo Zagreb, Deportivo La Coruña and Real Sociedad – failed to score in four consecutive home games in the Champions League.

Should Ajax take the lead against Midtjylland, that seems the basis for at least one point. The 34-time national champion is unbeaten in all 46 Champions League group matches in which the lead was taken.

Ajax-FC Midtjylland starts on Wednesday at 9 p.m. At the same time, the kick-off is at Liverpool-Atalanta, the other match in group D.
