AI will revolutionize world, OpenAI CEO Altman predicts; Microsoft invests billions.
The potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the world is something that has been discussed for some time. Now, with the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the world’s most advanced AI language model, we are seeing just how powerful AI can be. Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, believes that AI will be just as transformative as the iPhone was 15 years ago. ChatGPT can write essays, articles, poems, translate text and generate ideas on virtually anything.
Microsoft has also recently made a substantial investment in OpenAI, indicating that they are also taking the potential of AI seriously. Altman believes that AI models will help humanity solve mysteries that would have otherwise taken millennia to unlock, and will generally “improve all aspects of reality to help us live our best lives”.
However, with this power comes the risk of misuse. Altman is less worried about AI going rogue and acting evil than about “an accidental misuse in the short term”. To tackle this risk, OpenAI will be rolling out the latest and most advanced versions of ChatGPT gradually, to give people, institutions and policymakers a chance to get familiar with it.
At the same time, ChatGPT is already forcing us to adapt. There are many challenges that ChatGPT will bring, particularly when it comes to education, plagiarism, and professional and academic integrity. OpenAI is already exploring ways in which it can help teachers detect the output of any generative AI like ChatGPT, such as watermarking technologies.
Finally, Altman believes that society should set boundaries for ChatGPT, to decide what an artificial general intelligence (AGI), or machine intelligence, “can and should never do”. This will give people the freedom to customise their experience with AGI as they see fit. Altman believes that AI can have a hugely positive impact on society, but it is important that we are aware of the risks and take steps to ensure that these are managed.
