Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged with the murder of George Floyd, was released on bail on Wednesday, court papers show. Chauvin was released on parole after paying $ 1 million in bail (nearly $ 850,000).
Three other agents have previously been released on bail
He must appear in court in March 2021.
In June, Chauvin received a bail of $ 1.25 million (more than 1 million euros) from the American judge. This was later reduced to $ 1 million. For this Chauvin had to adhere to a number of conditions, such as handing in his firearms. The ex-agent is also prohibited from contacting George Floyd’s family.
Chauvin has been charged with manslaughter because he stood with his knee on the neck of black American George Floyd for minutes in May while it was being filmed. Floyd later died in hospital.
Floyd’s cause of death is still controversial, but according to the prosecution, it is clear that without Chauvin’s brutal treatment, the victim would still be alive.
Three of the former cop’s colleagues were also fired and charged with aiding and contributing to Floyd’s death. They were given a joint bail of 1 million dollars, which was later reduced to 750,000 dollars (637,000 euros). This has been paid before. Chauvin’s colleagues are also expected to appear in court in March.
Floyd’s death sparked protests in the United States and abroad against police brutality and racism. In the Netherlands, Floyd’s death also led to demonstrations in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Maastricht, among others.
