In his online briefing, Péter Szijjártó said that the indication that the “liberal mainstream” governments and the EU itself are trying to force runs counter to European rules, which stipulate that the union can only make its political decisions unanimously.
– the Minister stated, adding that Hungary considers it harmful and unfair if decisions were not taken unanimously, because the negative effects of the decisions would affect all EU member states, including those whose aspects were not taken into account.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade sees that
The EU wanted everyone at the UN to vote unanimously in favor of the package. However, Hungary has not been and will not be willing to welcome migration. He reserves the right to act in international organizations on the basis of his own interests, Péter Szijjártó emphasized, noting that Hungary is not alone in its position, several countries are opposed to “passing on” the new proposal.
In the context of the Western Balkans, the Minister said that it had become clear that the European Union was at a disadvantage in the “competition” for the region. The initiative was taken by the United States, Russia and China. The reason for this is the “slowness of Europe”, which is contrary to its own interests as well as those of Hungary. Serbia’s EU integration process needs to be accelerated, he said.
Regarding the situation in Belarus, he said that it was unacceptable that Minsk had expelled the ambassadors of Poland and Lithuania. He added, however, the importance of maintaining communication channels with the country’s leadership. According to him, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus could also be added to the new list of sanctions adopted by the Council.
Due to the case of poisoning of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the union plans to create a list of sanctions against Russia on the basis of a French and German proposal, Peter Szijjártó said.
