This is Giovanni Angelo Becciu, who was involved in the sale of a building in London. He visited Argentina in 2019.

Pope Francis accepted the resignation presented in the last hours by the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. The religious is investigated by the buying and selling of properties with charitable funds.

“Today, Thursday, September 24, the Holy Father accepted the resignation of the position of prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and of the rights linked to the cardinal, presented by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu,” the brief report reads .

The Vatican did not explain the reasons for the resignation. Although it was known that Becciu was affected by an investigation as a result of the sale of a building in London, in Sloane Avenue, with funds obtained from the donations of the faithful for charitable works.

On June 5, the Vatican authorities arrested Italian financier Gianluigi Torzi, accused of crimes such as extortion, money laundering and fraud, in the framework of this investigation.

In February, the Vatican Prosecutor’s Office seized documents and electronic devices in the offices of a former high-ranking member of the Secretary of State, Alberto Perlasca, former head of the Administrative Office of the First Section of the Secretary of State.

The events would be framed in the period in which Cardinal Angelo Becciu was in the office for General Affairs of the Secretary of State, from which he left in September 2018 as prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

The religious spoke about this issue last February and said that he was not being investigated and denied that money from those charity funds was spent for speculative purposes in the purchase of that property.

Becciu had a brief stint in Argentina during April 2019. It was in La Rioja and he did so as an envoy of Pope Francis when the Church beatified Bishop Enrique Angelelli and three other victims of the military dictatorship.

The ceremony, in which the priests Gabriel Longueville and Carlos de Dios Murias and the father of the family Wenceslao Pedernera were also beatified, was a historical event for the country since they are the first martyrs of the Church in Argentina officially recognized by the Vatican who were victims of the last military dictatorship.

“First of all, I want to send the embrace of Pope Francis whom I have met before coming here,” Becciu began at that time and, after greeting those present, he highlighted the four blessed as “Models of virtue and strength in faith until martyrdom”.
