The inventor is AJ Peper, the owner of a small technology company, Command Sight. He thought of a potentially revolutionary device through which dogs trained for special operations would receive instructions during missions.

Peper built it from Rex Specs dog goggles, to which he attached an augmented reality device to transmit visual cues to the animal’s remote guidance.

Dogs are trained to respond to verbal commands to detect drugs, explosives and track suspects, but the new communication interface would allow for more effective interaction with dogs through real-time instructions.

The dog’s partner can see on the screen of his mobile device or on a laptop “the environment in which the dog moves and can tap on any point or object in that space to draw the dog’s attention to it,” Peper explained.

The US military supports this project through its own laboratories and research programs and says it is interested in the new canine glasses.

Peper, who has a degree in education, has also been part of advanced dog training programs. The idea for virtual reality glasses for dogs came to him in 2017 and since then he has been working on a prototype that he tested and found out that it works, the animals respond to visual stimuli.

The test was performed on Mater, the company’s mascot, after he was accustomed to glasses and first trained with a laser-emitted point. The training lasted one month, the last week being dedicated to the transition from laser to augmented reality indicator.

“Can you imagine my joy when I fixed the device, I turned it on, and it reacted to the indicator. Until then, it had only been an idea, ”said Peper, who now has to work on the size and strength of his product, as well as transforming it into a completely wireless system.

Currently, the guidance of dogs in various operations takes place through verbal or physical commands, and lasers are used for more precise instructions. However, they have the disadvantage that they can attract the opponent’s attention on the battlefield and cannot be used when the dog disappears around a corner, a valley or in a building.

The dog can be guided from more than a kilometer away from a safe space such as a bunker – so the animal can be sent to inspect the ground and trained step by step.
