The prosecution investigates a neighbor of Vitoria as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of species trafficking and animal abuse and neglect when trying to send a reptile, a varano, to Cádiz, through a courier company, in a carton box with the indication that contained crickets.
The investigation has been initiated by the Local Police of Vitoria and has now decided to send the prosecution proceedings. Municipal veterinarians have determined that, had he not been intercepted, the reptile probably wouldn’t have survived to the trip.
As reported this Friday by the local Vitoria police, last week a patrol from the Environment group of this police force went to a courier company in Vitoria from where they had warned that in a moving package there could be a large animal.
Tied and packed
The agents verified that inside the box there was a Nile monitor lizard in a cloth wrap and tied with zip ties. Also, it had been packed for several hours.
The Local Police and Seprona, the nature protection service of the Civil Guard, were in charge of verifying the documentation of the animal and initially handed over the animal to its owner while waiting to check other procedures. But, after verifying that the owner of the monitor did not have the legal documentation to have the animal, the Vitoria Police took charge of the reptile this Friday.
The owner of the animal, for his part, is being investigated for the alleged commission of the crimes of species trafficking, mistreatment and animal abandonment.
