Donnie Darko (2001)
In one of the first independent cult movies of the new millennium, Maggie plays the protagonist’s sister Jake Gyllenhaal, trapped in a mental and temporal loop that makes of Donnie Darko a dark and compelling film, a thriller of the psyche to be admired for the narrative progression towards a throbbing finale. The directorial debut of Richard Kelly is dazzling and projects Gyllenhaal into the ranks of actresses to follow. Great soundtrack for a film still capable of shaking today. One of those stories that today would be impossible to bring to the big screen in its time became a cult film thanks to the superb performance of Gyllenhaal, struggling with a character played with courage and enormous seductive charge. Secretary unhinges the defenses of the spectator’s respectability to tell a love story in its own way romantic, an unusual encounter of lost souls and eager bodies. James Spader In all its ambiguity it works wonders, but the absolute dominatrix of the film is Maggie’s irresistible Maoschist secretary, rightly nominated for a Golden Globe. The Dark Knight (2008)
Called by Christopher Nolan to replace Katie Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes, Gyllenhaal responds with a charismatic and dramatic actress test, perfect in being the counterpart to the madness of the Bat Man and the great Joker played by Heath Ledger. The dark Knight confirms the actress’s ability to master even high-budget films. The farewell of the character is magnificent in a highly dramatic montage. Not our favorite Batman – we prefer the first installment of Nolan’s trilogy – but a film of enormous visual and psychological impact. Crazy Heart (2009)
Love story tormented and corroded by alcohol that between the singer Jeff Bridges and journalist Maggie Gyllenhaal. Oscar for the great Jeff, nomination as supporting actress for Gyllenhaal. And maybe he deserved something more …Available on Chili, Google Play, Apple Itunes, TIMVision.
Far From Here (2018)
In a film with a high dramatic rate, Maggie Gyllenhaal once again chooses to challenge the convictions and the right-thinking by interpreting at best a lovable character in his ambiguity. A test as always courageous, which embellishes Far from here making it a little jewel of psychological introspection, perfect for the contradictions of our time. He confirms (if any were still needed) that Gyllenhaal’s talent doesn’t know the term homologation. “Incorrect” movies like this are always welcome … Available on Rakuten TV, Chili, Google Play, Apple Itunes, TIMVision, NOW TV.
Actress definitely at ease with serious roles, Maggie Gyllenhaal sometimes decides not to take herself too seriously. Thanks to this propensity, the actress has shot one of the most smashing and fun action of recent years, that White House Down with Channing Tatum e Jamie Foxx. For a cheerful evening and a pinch of corrosive criticism, we highly recommend it.
