In sunny weather, with asphalt temperatures of 46 degrees and air temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius, this year’s ninth time trial training began in Mugello at the 2020 Formula One Tuscany Grand Prix. Based on the results of the third free practice, Mercedes seemed to be the favorite, but Max Verstappen was also close to Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.

A Q1 early with the two Williams, Nicholas Latifi and George Russell drove to the field for the first time. Of the two, the Canadian was faster on the first run, but soon both of them were skipped by the riders trying later.

Competitors also had to pay attention to tighter track boundaries on the fast laps: in turn 14, the right-hand side of the sled was free to cross so far, but race director Michael Masi stated before qualifying that it was mandatory to touch at least the shaking stones.

During the first blade changes, Bottas was 29,000 faster than Hamilton, and Verstappen was almost 6 tenths of a second behind the Mercedes. A 4-5. races were jumped up by Racing Point riders, followed by Alexander Albon with Red Bull and Charles Leclerc with the faster Ferrari. With the other red car, Sebastian Vettel’s first lap was only enough for 14th place.

Before the end of the first qualifying round, Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri), Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo), George Russell (Williams) and two Haas were in the elimination zone. With a few exceptions in his hair, almost everyone drove to the track to improve. Many succeeded, so Monza winner Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo), two Williams and Kevin Magnussen (Haas) did not make it. Russell also rode seriously in the gravel bed on his fastest lap, but still beat his teammate.

A Q2-I unlike usual, the teams didn’t start tactics as far as tire choices were concerned, everyone was trying to move on using the red sidewall, soft Pirellis. After the first measured laps, Hamilton was in the lead but was only 13 regiments faster than Bottas. Verstappen also got closer, one and a half tenths of a second slower than Hamilton’s time. He was followed by current and former teammates Albon and renault’s Daniel Ricciardo. Of the two Ferrari drivers, Leclerc could feel safer with his seventh time, with Vettel’s first lap in 13th place enough.

Life also took place in the pit lane, with Verstappen on the track almost colliding with Lance Stroll Racing Point for the first time.

Ten people took advantage of the last try. In the end, Lando Norris (McLaren), Danyiil Kvjat (AlphaTauri), Räikkönen, Vettel and Romain Grosjean (Haas) did not advance. Like Russell in Q1, Kvjat walked through the unpaved parts, picking up a serious cloud of dust.

A Q3-as after the first rises, Hamilton led by 59 milliseconds ahead of Bottas. He was followed by Verstappen 4 and Albon by eight decades behind Red Bull, while the temporary third line was leased by Stroll and Ricciardo. Behind them was Leclerc and mclarenes Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez (Racing Point) and Esteban Ocon (Renault) had no measured range yet. The Mexican later completed his first measured lap, jumping to fifth place in the provisional table.

For the finale, everyone screwed up the engines and put on new tires. First Hamilton, then Verstappen and Leclerc cut him to their last fast lap. They were followed by Bottas, Albon closed the line. One Mercedes driver improved his lap, and Bottas’ lap was compromised by a yellow-flagged section. Hamilton still took the 95th pole position of his career with a track peak of 1: 15,144. A 3-4. there was a place left for the Red Bull duo, but on the yellow flag, Leclerc won a lot: the Monaco passed in the affected sector before Ocon spun and ran for time in fifth place. Perez and Stroll finished sixth and seventh, but the Mexicans will then swap places on the starting grid for a starting penalty. Ricciardo, Sainz and Ocon shared the top ten remaining places.
